We hope you had a wonderful summer and have somehow managed to stay cool. That's been a challenge here in Central Texas (we're still at near-100 degree weather)! We are open again for fall ordering and will begin shipping September 15th. I love this time of year when the weather cools down and it begins to smell of fall in the air. And what a great time to finally plant all those gorgeous spring bulbs you've been thinking about. There's such a wonderful selection this time of year -- gorgeous Tulips , sweet Daffodils, and who can resist having drifts of early Snow Crocuses peaking their heads out from under the snow. And if you do decide to plant those gorgeous long drifts of flowers, be sure to check out our Bushels of Bullbs. We're still developing that page and should have it up next week, but in the meantime you can calll us for prices. It's a great and exonomical way to plant masses of flowers such as Daffodils, Tulips, Hostas, Daylilies, Siberian Irises and Lilies. |
Speaking of Crocuses, did you know that there is a Crocus that blooms in the fall? Crocus Sativus is the original Saffron Crocus, with long red showy stigmas which flavor and color food a bright yellow. Of couse you'd need around 150 flowers to produce .035 oz. of saffron if you'd like to harvest your own. It blooms in mid fall. |
It's not too early to start thinking about forcing bulbs. And I hate to say it so early, but soon the Christmas holidays will be upon us. Our magnificent super-sized (36 cm) Hybrid Amaryllis Bulbs make spectacular and fool-proof pot plants that certainly put us in the holiday mood. They'll bloom in 6-8 weeks after being potted. Paperwhites can also be forced for inside winter bloom. In the South they can also be planted outside with no pre-cooling. My Paperwhites frequently pop up before Christmas! They're intoxicatingly fragrant. |
Sigh. I sure miss being up north sometimes with all the varieties that can be grown there. But here in the South we can also grown a great variety of bulbs that bloom in the Spring. Be sure to check out our Bulbs for the South page for some ideas.
Blessings,Mary
